The Vague History of Tezera

In the present era (read: the one my current campaign takes place during), there is a major lack of information regarding the world’s history. The goal of this document is to act as a general overview of events, so as to allow other events to be contextualized.

The Days of Myth #

Although things did, quite naturally, happen before this point, this is where the first records date back to.
This is considered an age before the differences between humans, elves, halvlings, etc. were entirely understood1 – most myths regarding how any of the great races came into being hearken back to this era, as well as many about how other phenomena came into being. Many stories from this era make reference to a First City of some kind.

The Age of Brightmoon #

Records pick up again2 in the midst of a border dispute between 3 countries regarding a small town named Brightmoon. The people within this town, desperate to maintain their independence, prayed for (and received) a divine miracle: a mandate from the merchant-god Tamrathur that, for as long as the townsfolk neither went to war nor intentionally swindled others, any attempts to inflict violence on or within the town would result in an equivalent price being claimed from the offender. Thus, Brightmoon became the diplomatic and trading hotspot of the region. This independence would last for a couple thousand years (which was longer than the 3 countries involved in the border dispute) before being broken due to the haughtiness of the town’s leadership.

The Age of Dragons #

Also known as “that time dragons tried to take over the world”. The forces of Man – as well as the newly-created dragonborne – successfully stopped them from doing that, even if half the alliances broke down near the end due to the latter wanting a homeland.

The Age of Koshchei #

Although there was a gap between the end of the war with the dragons and the rise of this asshole, the first king of the down below raised so much havoc that it’s incredibly easy to date basically everything from his hundred-and-first birthday to two thousand years after he was finally killed. He is the most famous lich in Tezera’s history as a result, and is known for causing at least two vampire plagues, at least seven non-vampiric plagues, making multiple discoveries that affect the understanding of magic even today, and generally being a completely evil douchbag.

The Age of Travel #

In this era, people finally realized that other countries existed. Sea travel, as well as exceptionally long trade caravans, became commonplace – as did attempts to use underhanded tactics to get favorable trades, such as selling hard drugs, offering sex, and using magic to enchant the other party. With the trade of goods also came the trade of myths and deities, which resulted in some bizzare stories where foreign deities got assimilated into and/or mixed up with local ones.

The Age of France #

French people, much like in our world, completely dominated the trade game3. Unlike in our world, the closest thing to Britain was in the middle of an enormous fucking war with the closest thing to Scotland, which meant that by the time the winner of that mess was decided, France had basically taken over the world.

France won so utterly that the aforementioned war ended partway through the Age of France.

The effects of this mean that French became the common language for international communication, and thus got shafted with some (but not all) of the linguistic weirdness that English acquired in our world4.
France would continue to exist (and to demand everyone did shit the French Way), at least until:

The Blood Wars #

Nobody’s entirely sure how it started. Nobody’s entirely sure when it started. All that historians can agree on is that everything went to hell within a five and a half year span, everybody ended up fighting everyone, all of the gods went silent, and people had to completely rebuild society approximately two hundred years later.

The Modern Age #

After the Blood Wars, three nations would quickly form: Luixav, which is headed by the Silent Council; Pamash, which is a true democracy, complete with chronic vote counting issues; and Diocia, which is headed by a monarch (Queen Grayviz, who is responsible for writing the laws), the head of Judgement (Ozwald Lyst, who is responsible for interpreting the laws), and the head of Enforcement (Marilynn Raldifix, who is responsible for enforcing the laws). Each of these individuals is the head of a group of elected officials, resulting in a system that looks suprisingly similar to the American government in our world (albeit with significantly less corporate involvement, at least at current).

Once these nations were founded, the war-weary populace would take the discoveries made to advance the war and turn them toward peace – speedrunning the industrial revolution in the process. Due to the chaos of the Blood wars, a lot of things had been forgotten… critically including the Americas, which prevented the spread of Chattle Slavery, thus resulting in Tezera never inventing skin-tone-based racism.

At the time of the campaign, the culture and technology mimic that of the late 1970s/early 1980s in our world’s. Diocia’s having fun messing around with capitalism, the internet is currently a univerity intranet, and nobody’s really concerned that history might try to repeat itself…
At least for now.

  1. Or, in many cases, even existed. ↩︎

  2. At least in the vicinity of Anilios, the main area in which our story takes place. ↩︎

  3. Hey, where do you think the phrase “lingua franca” came from? ↩︎

  4. Read: instead of linguistic purism, French in Tezera gravitated toward “hey, wanna see how many loanwords and loan-semantics I can shove into this bad boy?” ↩︎
